"One of the first functions of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) was to administer a statewide vehicle registration program. That function began in 1917, just months after state lawmakers had created what was then known as the Highway Department. The money collected from registration fees started the Texas "highway user fee" concept, whereby vehicles using the roads paid for the roads... In 1997, TxDOT and the Vehicle Titles and Registration Division (VTR) observed their 80th anniversary... This book is a comprehensive look at our most noticeable product - license plates. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice, another one of our close partners, has produced most of our license plates and registration indicia during the past 80 years.
