Summary
This handbook examines the many facets of transportation planning. This third edition has been organized to reflect the changing characteristics of transportation planning. The nine factors that are likely to influence how transportation systems are planned and perform include: population growth, changing demographics, evolving economic (and thus geographic) markets, transportation system preservation, technology, financing capacities, changing institutional structures, environmental imperatives, and energy. The handbook is organized into three major sections: basic understanding (chapters 1-8), application contexts (chapters 9-15), and strategy-specific planning (chapters 16-21).
