TxDOT Research Project

Quantification of the Performance of Preventative Maintenance and Rehabilitation Strategies

What Was the Need?
TxDOT has been replacing their PMIS system by Pavement Analyst (PA) in one of the most ambitious and significant improvements for the planning, construction, and management of their highway infrastructure, which is the most important asset of the State of Texas. The implementation of PA has been a great success and, although some of the benefits are evident already, most of the benefits will be realized in time by a more cost-effective and objective management of the pavement infrastructure. A critical component of PA are the pavement performance models and the effect of maintenance and rehabilitation activities on the expected pavement performance. However, the current performance models have been mostly inherited from the previous PMIS and are not accurate enough resulting in sub-optimal strategy selection and resource allocation.

What's the Solution?
This research will use historical data contained in Pavement Analyst and advanced big data analysis techniques to develop accurate performance models based on actual data from Texas highway network. Models for flexible and rigid pavements, including JCP, JRCP and CRCP, will be developed.
