Summary
This NCHRP Digest contains suggested revisions to the AASHTO "Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges" based on findings from the final report under NCHRP Project 10-35, which was initiated to evaluate the fatigue behavior of welded and mechanical splices for reinforcing bars in bridges and to develop practical design provisions. The research was accomplished by carrying out the following four tasks: a review and summary of published and unpublished literature; the design and conduct of a laboratory program of fatigue tests; a statistical analysis of the experimental results and those obtained from the literature; and the formulation of design guidelines.
