TxDOT Research Project

Quantification of the Impact of a Road’s Condition on Emissions

What Was the Need?
"Roads in poor condition not only decrease driver comfort, but also affect traveling speed and result in increased user costs, especially in fuel consumption, vehicle damage, and travel time. Due to limited funds, maintenance and rehabilitation treatments are often deferred for short-term cost reduction, although in the long term, this approach has negative effects on the road condition and on air quality."

What's the Solution?
As a result of this study, it was found that the better the pavement condition the lower the vehicle gas emissions. Equations to estimate vehicle gas emissions from pavement condition are presented in the report. Potential gas emission savings due to the implementation of effective maintenance and rehabilitation practices are also quantified.
